Are You Getting a Coronavirus Check?

-

Update to post: checks started going out April 13th. The IRS has a check status checker if you qualify for a check but haven’t received it.

Are you getting a coronavirus check?

Starting Point
– IF you filed taxes as “Married filing jointly” you qualify for $2,400 as a married couple
– IF you filed taxes as “Single” you qualify for $1,200
– IF you filed taxes as “Head of Household” you qualify for $1,200

– THEN add $500 for each kid 16 or younger.

Exceptions and Deductions

Now, you have to look at your “adjusted income,” which can be found on Line 8b of your 2019 1040 federal tax return.

– For those “Married filing jointly,” you qualify for a check if your “adjusted income” does not exceed $198,000. BUT, if you are over $150,000 on that adjusted income line, you have to start subtracting $5 for every $100 in income you are over the $150,000 cap.

– For those “Single,” you qualify for a check if your “adjusted income” does not exceed $99,000. BUT, if your are over $75,000 on that adjusted income line, you have to start subtracting $5 for every $100 in income you are over the $75,000 cap.

– For those “Head of Household,” you qualify for a check if your “adjusted income” does not exceed $112,500. BUT, if your are over $75,000 on that adjusted income line, you have to start subtracting $5 for every $100 in income you are over the $75,000 cap.

When will your check arrive?

If the W Bush rebate checks from the great recession of 2008 are a guide to timeline, as much as 2 months for distribution of most checks. For those who file taxes electronically AND have direct deposit bank information on file with the IRS, 2 to 3 weeks is the fastest potential timeline. For others, as much as 8 weeks since previous year filings will have to be reviewed or even have information requested from the Social Security Administration or Veterans Affairs.

A final note: Because of the coronavirus, the IRS has shut down its in-person taxpayer assistance centers located across the country. This will result in delays for individuals seeking information from the IRS.

This information was compiled from CNN, NBC and NY Times stories on the coronavirus checks.
